Exercising during the Coronavirus
Why it is more important than ever
The Covid-19 virus has caused an unprecedented effect which no one could have predicted. Currently the force of the virus on the world is dramatic and with it, everyone’s daily lives are being impacted.
The fear of the unknown of the virus may cause many to panic, which as a subsequence can have a huge negative effect on our mental health. While it is important to stay informed, there are also many things we can do to support and manage our wellbeing during such times.
Exercise
During the Coronavirus there are simple things you can do that may help, to stay mentally and physically active. As well as going for walks in the fresh air, officials also advise eating healthily and getting enough exercise. We all know the benefits that exercise has on our physical health, but not everyone is aware of the positive effect it can have on our mental wellbeing too.
Reduce Stress
The event of the Coronavirus outbreak has caused many of us to feel threatened. As a result of this our body’s defences cut in and create a stress response, which may make us feel uncomfortable. Physical exercise can be very effective in relieving stress. As you exercise your body produces cortisol (the stress hormone). As a result of regular exercise it allows your body to regulate cortisol, meaning you will feel less stressed and overwhelmed in certain situations.
Reduces anxiety
When you exercise, your brain chemistry changes and feel good hormones called endorphins are released. These hormones are known to calm anxiety and lift your mood.
Increases self-esteem
According to a center for CBT Therapy in London, when you feel better physically, you feel better mentally.
Improves Sleep
According to research from The Sleep Doctor exercise can contribute to more sound and restful sleep. Physical activity increases time spent in deep sleep, the most physically restorative sleep phase. Deep sleep helps to boost immune function and control stress and anxiety.
How to Exercise during the Coronavirus
Join a Health Club
As long as you have no Coronavirus symptons and are not vulnerable to the disease, here at the Abbey Hotel in Redditch, following the advice and guidance of Public Health England (PHE) and Health Protection Scotland (HPS), we have taken steps to ensure the safety of our customer while they work out. This includes continuing to maintain our robust cleaning and sanitation schedule across the gym facilities and equipment. Making sure facility checks are carried out every 30 minutes and ensuring ensure that we have plenty of soap and hand sanitiser available.
Also it has now been confirmed that Chlorine kills the COVID-19 virus, so there is no need to be concerned about contaminated waters and swimming is a great all round exercise.
What if you are self-isolating?
It is still important (if you are in good health) to continue exercising. If you are unable to go to our Health Club we can arrange skype calls with our personal trainers for fitness tips. We will also be shortly introducing a number of keep fit videos that will be loaded on our You Tube channel to allow you to exercise from home.
If you are simply scared of leaving the house at this time, our personal trainers can arrange home visits or training sessions outside. We will also be starting outdoor exercise classes and walking clubs for those members that still wish to exercise but avoid confined spaces. Research has shown that getting outside in nature has many mental health benefits as well.
